Heritage Lottery Fund Grant 4th June 2019

4th June 2019

TOWER UPDATE - if you have passed the church in the last 10days you will have noticed that the scaffolding is now complete and the tower is now covered.  A recent inspection by our builder, architect and our engineer surveyor revealed a surprise.  The object of the meeting was to remove the old lead and accurately assess the condition of the wooden beams.  Beneath the lead they found grass which had been laid out like a blanket to protect the lead from the acidic tannins in the Oak which would cause the lead to become brittle. The above gentleman are very experienced in undertaking work on churches and listed buildings but they had never seen this technique before. Some had gone to seed, so we could grow 300-year old uncontaminated organic grass.  A first for St Mary Magdalene’s - It is very unusual! 👍🏻👍🏻
